Tips to Prepare for Professional Headshots

Getting professional headshots taken can feel a little intimidating, but with the right preparation, you’ll look and feel your best. These photos are important because they often make your first impression on jobs, websites, or social media. Here are some easy tips to help you get ready.

A professional headshot is often first impression and helps establish credibility. Whether it’s for a LinkedIn profile, company website, or business card, a high-quality headshot conveys professionalism, confidence, and approachability. It also helps others recognize and remember you, making it easier to build trust and connections in both professional and networking settings.

Pick the right outfit. Wear solid colors instead of busy patterns or logos, which can be distracting. Choose clothes that make you feel confident and fit well. A simple shirt or blouse in a color that flatters your skin tone is a great choice. If you’re unsure, bring an extra outfit or two to the photo shoot.

Take care of grooming. Get a haircut a few days before your session if needed. Make sure your hair is neat and styled the way you like it. For makeup, keep it natural—just enough to enhance your features. Guys should trim facial hair or shave if they prefer a clean look.

Get good rest. Try to sleep well the night before so you don’t look tired in your photos. Drink water and avoid too much salt, which can make your face puffy.

Practice your smile. Look in the mirror and try a few expressions. A natural smile is usually best.

Most importantly, relax and be yourself. A professional photographer will help guide you. When you’re comfortable, your personality will shine through—and that’s the best kind of headshot!
