As Kentucky legalizes medical cannabis in January 2025, many people are curious about cannabis. Initially, it will be available for six conditions: cancer, chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, nausea, and PTSD. However, hemp-derived cannabis products, which can also help with these and other issues like anxiety and sleep, are already available without a medical card.

End the Stigma
For six years, 502 Hemp in Middletown has worked to educate and destigmatize hemp products in Kentucky, highlighting their health benefits. Many people remain confused about the difference between hemp and marijuana, and how THC products from hemp can be as effective as those from marijuana. The key lies in understanding cannabinoids, the chemical compounds in the cannabis plant, and the laws surrounding them.

Endocannabinoid System
While CBD and THC are the most well-known cannabinoids, there are over 120 in cannabis that interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid System. Research suggests some conditions may be caused by a cannabinoid deficiency. Full-spectrum CBD products contain all cannabinoids, but only trace amounts of THC. Delta 9 THC, the most intoxicating cannabinoid, can be extracted from both hemp and marijuana, as they are the same plant, Cannabis Sativa.

Finding What’s Right for You
The 2018 Farm Bill defines hemp as containing less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC by dry weight, while marijuana has higher THC levels and is a Schedule One controlled substance. A common misconception is that Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC are synthetic, but both are naturally occurring in cannabis and have similar effects. Delta 8 is especially helpful for pain and sleep, and for those who experience heightened anxiety from Delta 9.
