| It’s myth buster time! Specifically the one where broken glass = whole new window. We all get them… that dang broken window pane on just one side of the double paned window. Thanks to the golf ball, the soccer ball, the baseball, the dog, the kid, whatever it is–you’re now staring at a giant crack or, if your glass is tempered, a bazillion small ones where you could once see a lovely view. And then, automatically, your mind turns to replacing a whole window. Windows are custom built by definition to fit the exact measurements you provide a fabricator so it will fit perfectly inside the big hole on the side of your house that is there for that purpose. They’re expensive and they take weeks to make it to your house before you can get them installed. Ugh. But that double paned glass unit inside your window is actually removeable*. It can be replaced instead of replacing the entire window, for less money and a lot less time spent staring at that (or those) annoying cracks. This goes for in-door glass as well. Insulated glass units (or IGUs in glass world jargon) are usually easily changed out and can transform that aggravation into a nice clear view usually within a couple of weeks. And they can match the grids for since for most modern windows, the grids (muntins, again, talking glass talk) are inside, in between the two panes of glass of the unit. Myth? Busted. |
